Late night on 80s Doordarshan - Billboard Hits
There were many other popular songs that did well in India like Summer of 69 or Just beat it!... Another brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd and so forth.
Many of them thought, Billboard hits was similar to the "Chitrahaar" program as in English nos, it was a series of English songs with ratings and unlike Bollywood movie songs here there were no continuous Hollywood movie soundtracks but just a few. In the West from decades together the concept was of an Independent Music Album of an Artist or a Band produced by the Record Co'es and after many years by mid 90s, this type of concept was introduced in the Indian Music industry too. The Indi-pop culture came up and it did pretty Good in the market, I recall of the early artists like Baba Sehgal, Suchitra Krishnamurthy or Apache Indian(UK artist) who did some albums in India.
Funny fact: For sometime, people thought Billboard hits had got to do something with Hoardings of ads that we see all over the cities :)
Billboard is a Music chart that shows the top 100 songs from around the world. Actually its a Magazine all about Music News from the Music Industry and the frequency of hits were determined every week. It showed the top 100 charts of the week and the most popular were called as HOT 100 singles and again there are other titles like top Billboard 200 and so on. Just found out from the web that it is one of the the oldest trade magazines in the world. The First Issue by the United States was started way back in 1894...Wow!
Thinking about the show, I remember one of the Host, a girl named "Kennedy" who presented the Billboard in a very cool manner, made it very interesting by giving us some funny facts about the Artists and also talking about their achievements which was inspiring to us. I couldn't find her in any of the present programs as I was curious to know - what was she upto now? Yeaah some lost memories still diggin' for it!
Friends, if you have watched this show on the good old doordarshan channel, do you have any memories? I guess we fairly got to know about a lot of international artists from the 80s, their Albums and great songs. At that time my most fav nos were of Madonna "Papa Don't preach", Bangles "Walk like an Egyptian", Cyndi lauper "Girls just wanna have fun", George Michael "Wake me up before you go go", Bruce Springsteen
"Born in the USA", Bon Jovi " Blaze of Glory" and other famous artists like Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, Tina turner, Elton John, Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston...n also if you remember from the 70s till 90s there were many Great Rock bands from the US, UK Australian and Canadian countries and I assume in India the US and UK Bands were more popular to name a few in Rock bands are Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Rolling Stones, U2, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin..and in Pop there were ABBA, Genesis, Bee Gees, Beach boys, The Beatles and the list could go on, I better stop :)
So all this info we got to know better from this particular show "Billboard hits" aired on Doordarshan for a very short period of time which rocked our world for sometime and then it was cancelled for certain reasons which I do not know. Anyways if you're lucky you could find your favorite Music videos on Youtube.

Exclusive: "Mind Your Language" 1977 a British Comedy Sitcom.
Watch the Pilot Episode, right here ;) its called "THE FIRST LESSON".
This may have not been aired on DD national channel in the 70s or 80s but I must tell ya, its pretty entertaining. I am sure you guys would love it the plot is based on the Foreign students who join the Adult School in UK England i believe, to learn "English as a Foreign Language" this is the course they are "Unrolled for" as one of the student puts it to the school's pompous and tight-fisted Principal, Ms Courtney, when the student is looking to find the Classroom (what he means is Enrolled for) Mr Brown who's the English teacher learns himself the trouble and humor in different cultures from the students as he is teaching them. I love this sitcom enjoyed watchin' very episode n its really hilarious to listen to the students when they innocently mis-interpret things or mis-pronounce words while they are learning. Watch n Enjoy:)">
